Mint
The refreshing neighbour who will absolutely take over the yard if you let it.

Mint is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial known for taking over gardens if it isn't managed. Over 30 varieties exist, but Cindy sticks to a basic, dependable mint for the yard.
How to grow it
- Best planted in a sunny spot rather than a contained raised bed — Cindy's contained mint got less sun and didn't thrive as well.
- To control spread without sacrificing sun, sink a pot directly into the ground: roots stay protected through winter while the runners stay contained.
How to use & eat it
- Fresh leaves in watermelon salad, fruit salsas, and infused water all summer.
- Dry leaves for tea in winter.
- Traditionally used to soothe upset stomachs and headaches, and as a natural mosquito repellent.
Other neighbours
- Lemon BalmA hardy perennial in the mint family with a fragrant, lemony scent — it resurrects itself every spring, no replanting required.
