Lavender
A fragrant Mediterranean herb beloved for drying, sachets, and soothing oil.
Lavender is a fragrant, bushy Mediterranean relative of Rosemary. English Lavender is the hardiest and most fragrant type for cold climates (vs. French or Spanish varieties, which are prettier but less hardy) — the classic long-lasting lavender scent comes from English varieties specifically. Life expectancy is roughly 9 years per plant.
How to grow it
- Wants full sun, dry soil, and good drainage — avoid wet or rich soil.
- Plant in a raised mound with a little added sand to improve drainage.
- Give it about 2 feet of room to expand.
- Harvest in the morning when oils are most concentrated, cutting stems when about half the flower buds have opened.
How to use & eat it
- Sprinkle dried flowers in bath water.
- Tie into sachets for drawers or closets.
- Use the oil for bee stings, minor burns, and reducing inflammation.
- The scent is traditionally used to relieve stress and promote relaxation.
