Rosemary
A fragrant Mediterranean evergreen that grows as an annual here — but can winter over on a sunny windowsill.
Rosemary is a Mediterranean evergreen shrub grown as an annual in Edmonton's climate — it will not survive the winter outdoors. It has fragrant, needle-like leaves and flowers in white, pink, purple, or blue.
How to grow it
- Wants full sun and well-drained loamy soil.
- Can be dug up in late summer, potted, and brought indoors for the winter with a fairly high success rate.
- Indoors it needs a sunny window and regular watering — it drinks a lot in the house.
How to use & eat it
- Excellent with chicken, pork, steak, fish, potatoes, mushrooms, and spinach.
- Cindy's favorite: rosemary-roasted potatoes at 400°F for 45-60 minutes.
- Chop finely into sourdough bread dough.
